NIF Portugal: Why You Need It Before You Move

Everyone talks about the visa when moving to Portugal, but much less is said about the NIF, even though it is one of the first things you will need when opening a bank account, renting or buying property and starting your financial life in the country.

Everyone talks about the visa when moving to Portugal, which is understandable, but much less is said about the NIF, even though it is one of the first things you are likely to need once your plans become real.

The NIF, or Número de Identificação Fiscal, is your Portuguese tax identification number. Calling it a tax number, however, makes it sound far less important than it actually is because, in Portugal, it follows you through an enormous number of ordinary financial and contractual transactions.

You will need it to open a Portuguese bank account and enter into many contracts, and it will also become relevant when you rent or buy property, deal with the Portuguese Tax Authority, establish professional or financial relationships or begin putting the practical elements of your relocation in place.

For someone seriously considering a move to Portugal, this means that the NIF tends to become necessary much earlier than expected.

The visa is not always the first thing you will need

There is a period between deciding to move to Portugal and actually arriving here when a surprising amount starts happening.

You may begin looking for a property, speaking with landlords, considering a purchase, opening a Portuguese bank account or arranging payments connected with the move. This is usually when people discover that Portugal already expects them to have a local fiscal identity, even though they are not yet Portuguese residents.

Fortunately, you do not need to wait until you become resident to obtain one. A foreign national may obtain a Portuguese NIF as a non-resident, and the number remains the same if the person's residence status changes later.

For that reason, I generally see little advantage in leaving it until the last minute.

If you already know that Portugal is becoming part of your plans, obtaining the NIF early means that one of the basic pieces is already in place when the right property appears, when the bank asks for it or when another part of the relocation process starts moving faster than expected.

Why the NIF and a Portuguese bank account often come together

The NIF and bank account tend to appear at roughly the same stage of a relocation because one is normally required for the other.

Opening a bank account in Portugal requires a Portuguese NIF, and a local account can then become useful for paying rent, deposits and recurring expenses, as well as organising the financial side of life in Portugal before arrival.

This becomes particularly relevant when property is involved. If you intend to buy a home in Portugal, the NIF is part of the Portuguese tax relationship created by property ownership, while prospective tenants will also encounter it frequently when formalising their arrangements in the country.

For clients who prefer to organise both steps together, Alttavia offers a dedicated NIF + Portuguese bank account service, which can be arranged as part of the preparation for the move.

If you would like the full technical detail first, our step-by-step guide to the Portuguese NIF and bank account for non-residents covers the documents required and the mistakes that most often cause delays.

None of this is especially complicated when organised in advance, but it can become irritating when it appears in the middle of something more important.

A client who has found the property they want should be thinking about the terms of the lease or purchase, not discovering at that moment that another administrative step still needs to be completed.

One of the easiest things to arrange before moving

There are parts of an international relocation that necessarily take time. Immigration, housing and tax planning may depend on circumstances that need to be carefully considered, while the NIF is relatively straightforward and can be dealt with much earlier.

That is why we usually recommend treating it as part of the preparation for Portugal rather than something to resolve after arrival.

At Alttavia, we assist international clients with obtaining their Portuguese NIF and opening a bank account in Portugal, allowing both steps to be organised before they become an obstacle to something else.

If you are already researching properties, preparing a visa application or simply moving from the idea of Portugal to an actual relocation plan, there is little reason to wait until somebody asks you for your NIF.

It is a small administrative number, but you will use it far more often than most relocation guides would lead you to believe.
